Laucke opens $20m specialist flour mill

Flour miller Laucke has opened a $20 million specialist flour mill in central Victoria, The Australian has reported.

According to Sue Neales, reporter for rural/regional affairs for The Australian, Laucke’s commitment to specialist flour milling - rather than bulk, low-cost processing - “remains the nation’s brightest agricultural future”.

Neales says of Mark Laucke, grandson of founder Friedrich Laucke, “Mr Laucke, who works closely with scientists and wheat breeders to match customer preferences from around the globe with new grain varieties, is adamant the future for Australian agriculture, particularly in export fields, must be in striving to be the best-quality producer possible.”

“He believes a race to the bottom, where companies focus on being the lowest-cost producers of bulk, semi-processed goods - or worst still, come to rely on government subsidies to survive - spells doom for Australian food processing and the broader manufacturing sector,” wrote Neales.

This is reportedly why Laucke does not supply supermarket private-label or home-brand flours.
