Beef processor achieves AUS-MEAT approval for carcase grading

JBS Australia (JBS) has received Facility Objective Carcase Measurement (OCM) Device Approval from AUS-MEAT for cold carcase grading with the MEQ camera at three of its processing facilities. It has also won the AMPC Award for Driving Innovation & Technology Leadership for the objective carcase measurement adoption project.

The MEQ cold carcase grading camera is designed to replace traditional subjective assessments with technology-driven evaluations. The technology will help JBS provide good measurements that reduce grading variability and ensure consistent brand quality outcomes across all approved facilities.

The success of this initiative is the result of close collaboration between JBS Australia, Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA), the Australian Meat Processor Corporation (AMPC) and technology partner MEQ. Together, these organisations have worked to develop and validate the MEQ camera grading system, culminating in AUS-MEAT’s formal approval earlier this year.

Dr Dean Gutzke, MLA Objective Measurement Program Lead, said: “Having tools like the MEQ camera grade at the required speed and accuracy needed by JBS demonstrates to both MLA and AMPC how value can be created from more consistent, objective measurements, helping to align with market expectations. By enabling greater transparency and predictability in eating quality, this innovation supports the long-term competitiveness of Australian red meat.

“Beyond internal quality assurance, the implementation of OCM technology also benefits cattle producers. The system enables improved consistency in carcase feedback, providing producers with more accurate data on traits that influence market performance and consumer satisfaction.”
