Call for comment on endo-1,4-beta-xylanase as a processing aid
Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) is calling for comment on an application made by Novonesis to permit the use of an enzyme as a processing aid.
Endo-1,4-beta-xylanase (EC 3.2.1.8) is produced using Bacillus licheniformis containing the endo-1,4-beta-xylanase gene from Chryseobacterium cucumeris.
The application seeks approval to use endo-1,4-beta-xylanase when producing potable alcohol and starch and gluten fractions. The enzyme helps break down xylans naturally found in grains, during processing, and does not have any function in the final food.
FSANZ’s safety assessment found no public health or safety concerns with the proposed use of the enzyme.
Submissions close at 11.59 pm (Canberra time) on 29 January 2026.
