New Zealand distillery Scapegrace set to ramp up in Australia
New Zealand’s Scapegrace Distilling has announced it’s taking over its Australian distribution from 1 August 2025. The new direct-to-market approach will see it employ a dedicated Australian sales team to enhance existing relationships and grow new business across all states.
Founded in 2014 by brothers-in-law Daniel McLaughlin and Mark Neal, Scapegrace makes a range of spirits, including single malt whisky, gin, vodka and RTDs.
In 2024, it opened a new state-of-the-art, AU$27m distillery on the shores of Lake Dunstan, which has allowed for an increased production; so the time is right for the brand to grow its presence in Australia.
“Australia is a key market for Scapegrace. There are natural synergies between New Zealand and Australia when it comes to taste, culture and drinking occasions, and we know there’s the opportunity for us to strengthen our offering there,” said co-founder McLaughlin.
“We’ll be putting a greater focus on Australia with increased investment in retail, on-premise, and brand building. Bringing distribution in-house will also give us more control and the ability to scale quickly.”
Scapegrace is one of the market leaders in New Zealand and has earned a growing list of international accolades. In 2025, Vanguard Single Malt Whisky won gold at the World Whisky Awards, while Anthem Single Malt Whisky was awarded a gold medal at the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC). Scapegrace Gin has previously been named World’s Best London Dry Gin at the International Wine & Spirits Competition in London.
“We’re proud to represent the best of New Zealand distilling with our team using glacial water, locally grown ingredients, and a unique climate located on the 45th Parallel to craft spirits with exceptional depth of flavour,” McLaughlin said.
“We have a strong existing footprint in Australia and we’re excited to deepen relationships with retailers and customers, and to expand the reach of our award-winning spirits.”
