FSANZ updates its dietary exposure assessments guidance document
The 2024 edition of the Principles and Practices of Dietary Exposure Assessment for Food Regulatory Purposes is now available, which provides updated guidance on how Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) conducts dietary exposure assessments.
Dietary exposure assessment estimates how much of a chemical people consume through food, either across a population or within specific groups. FSANZ conducts these assessments using data on food chemical concentrations and food consumption patterns sourced from a variety of studies and surveys.
The document is regularly revised to reflect advancements in regulatory science and serves as a key reference for understanding:
- the principles FSANZ follows when conducting dietary exposure assessments
- the processes used to estimate dietary exposure to food chemicals
- how it uses information, including data submitted in applications, to estimate dietary exposure.
The guide outlines practices for assessing dietary exposure to a wide range of food chemicals, including food additives, contaminants, natural toxicants, agricultural and veterinary chemical residues, nutrients, novel ingredients, processing aids, and packaging chemicals.
