Plantic Technologies has developed ultrahigh-barrier plastic trays and rollstock that is claimed will improve freshness for meats, fish, pasta and smallgoods.

Plantic eco Plastic has an oxygen transmission rate of less than one-tenth of 1% and creates a new class of ultrahigh-barrier packaging materials. This packaging has the potential to significantly increase shelf life and product freshness. Plantic eco Plastic trays can be used for MAP applications where improved freshness and reduced carbon footprint are desired.

The bio-based trays are claimed to contain up to 80% renewable content and use up to 40% less energy than conventional polymers throughout the complete product life cycle.

The product range covers premade rigid trays through to rigid and flexible thermoformable roll stock. The material runs on industry-standard thermoforming, vacuum forming and form-fill-seal systems under specified processing conditions. The trays require no investment in new processing or packaging technology and are a drop-in replacement for a range of traditional plastics used in modified atmosphere and ultrahigh-barrier packaging. The rigid trays and roll stock are offered in a transparent form as well as a variety of colours and even multicolour formats.
