New online system for imported cargo documentation

Thursday, 11 September, 2014

A new online system for lodging imported cargo documentation is set to save commercial importers and customs brokers time and money, the Department of Agriculture says.

With sea and air container and canister imports topping 30 million in 2013-14, up to one million separate lodgements of documents are processed by the department each year. Previously, these documents were emailed, faxed or lodged in person - an expensive and time-consuming process.

“As part of a progressive implementation approach, we have today rolled out the new Cargo Online Lodgement System to some importers and brokers that should account for approximately 20% of the lodgements we receive,” said Raelene Vivian, the Department of Agriculture’s First Assistant Secretary Compliance Division.

“The new system allows clients to submit the import documentation, as well as check the progress of their lodgements, online.

“The initial group of clients was selected based on a representative cross-section to ensure the functionality of the new cargo system delivers on its intended purpose before its full release.”

The department anticipates that the new system will be available to all importers and brokers in early 2015.
