Flexible Biogas Solutions For The Food Sector

Are you encountering large trade waste and energy costs and watching dollars literally go down the drain? Sustainable trade waste management through Anaerobic Digestion is the solution and the experts at Finn Biogas are here to help!

Managing Director Jason Hawley says, “Anaerobic Digestion technology can treat your organic waste on-site and produce renewable energy that can be utilised back into your facility to offset electricity costs.” Not only this, but AD will “solve your waste disposal requirements. A win-win for your growing business!” Hawley says.

The overall benefits of AD:

  • Save $$$ on waste disposal and energy costs
  • Reduce odours and potent GHG’s to the atmosphere
  • Recover nutrient, compost & fertiliser products
  • Divert tonnes of waste from landfill and reduce environmental impact
  • Recover and re-use of water on-site

“We are seeing an increasing interest in the environmental advantages of AD in food and beverage industries,” Hawley says. Many businesses moving towards sustainable trade waste management include:

  • Food and Beverage manufacturers
  • Breweries
  • Abattoirs
  • Dairy producers
  • Farming operations
  • Commercial, manufacturing, trade or industrial facilities

“Finn Biogas have recently designed and developed two revolutionary new biogas products to tackle the growing need for cost-effective and sustainable waste disposal,” Hawley says. “We are delighted to be bringing to market the Firefly MMAD (Micro Modular Anaerobic Digester) and the FLEX20.”

The Firefly MMAD is a modular, ‘plug and play’ on-site waste management system specifically designed to meet the needs of commercial waste producers such as food and beverage facilities and small-scale farms. The Firefly empowers businesses to divert organic waste from landfill and generate renewable electricity + heat. With a waste throughput of 200–500 t/year, the flexible system allows for both Anaerobic Digestion and Aerobic Composting, transforming organic waste into a fertiliser substitute and compost additive.

Suitable waste streams include food scraps and kitchen waste, expired goods, bakery and bread waste, rice, grains, meat waste, eggshells, coffee grounds, agricultural waste, food & beverage factory waste. The biogas is combusted in the plant’s CHP unit to generate on-site renewable energy plus heat which can be used to offset electricity costs, whether it’s the lights in your facility, fridges, boilers or ventilation.

Overall Benefits of the Firefly MMAD:

  • Empowers businesses to divert their organic waste from landfill
  • Transforms organic waste into renewable energy
  • Produces a fertiliser substitute product
  • The Combined Heat & Power (CHP) generator has the capacity to generate electricity plus hot water
  • An integrated SCADA system control panel for automated operating and data collection.

Our second product, the FLEX20 Micro AD, is an on-site waste management system that adopts the CSTR technology (Continuously Stirred Tank Reactor) which allows for optimised biogas production. The FLEX20 is ideal for small food & beverage manufacturers, dairy producers, breweries, farming operations and wastewater treatment facilities. “Flexible in design, this system can take a range of waste streams including food & beverage factory waste, agricultural waste, fish & meat waste, manure, effluent and biosolids,’’ Hawley says.

“The Flex20 can take up to 200 - 500 tonnes/ year, producing 6kW continuously which is roughly enough to power 3-4 houses per day,” Hawley says.

Adaptable for all levels of technical expertise, the system allows operators to take either a minimalist approach to operation or fully immerse themselves in data logging and monitoring through the use of our integrated control system. The FLEX system is a game-changer in supporting bioenergy as an alternate renewable option, achieving carbon neutrality and responsible waste management for small Australian businesses.

Finn Biogas is a Brisbane based company that has built biogas solutions for clients throughout Australia, Europe, the Americas and South East Asia including projects for piggeries, chicken farms, dairy processing facilities, abattoirs and municipal sewage plants.
