Demand for I&I cleaning chemicals to grow in food processing industry

Friday, 02 May, 2014

Demand for industrial and institutional (I&I) cleaning chemicals is predicted to grow rapidly in the US in the next four years. The Freedonia Group anticipates that demand for the products will rise more than 3% per year to $11.5 billion by 2018.

“While economic growth will provide the foundation for rising demand, infection-related health concerns will drive some of the fastest advances, particularly for disinfectants and sanitisers in the food and beverage processing industry and in healthcare facilities,” explained Freedonia Analyst Nick Cunningham.

Increasing consumption in the food and beverage industry will significantly contribute to overall increased demand for I&I chemicals. Widely publicised foodborne illness outbreaks and healthy industry growth will continue to support increased product usage rates, Freedonia says.

The commercial market is the biggest outlet for I&I chemicals. The sheer size of the commercial market - which includes foodservice, retail outlets and laundry and dry cleaning - will see commercial applications register the largest net value gains.

As demand for I&I cleaning chemicals grows, so too will demand for greener, eco-friendly alternatives, Freedonia predicts. The fastest advances are expected to be in institutional markets, despite tight government budgets restraining growth. More modest growth in commercial applications will reflect general market maturity.
