World wine prices — how does Australia compare?

Australia was ranked as the 39th most expensive country in which to buy wine in the 2016 Wine Price Index released by motorhome rental platform SHAREaCAMPER.

The index, which averages and compares local and imported wine prices in each country, found the United Arab Emirates was the most expensive destination for average wine costs, with Paraguay being the cheapest.

In Australia, the average cost of a 750 mL bottle was $21.59, factoring in both local and imported wines. In contrast, New Zealand was ranked as the 10th least expensive country in which  to buy wine, with an average bottle costing only $14.43. Paraguay took the title of cheapest, with an average price of $9.90/bottle; at the other end of the scale, the United Arab Emirates came in at over five times higher, at $51.15/bottle. Australia drinks an average of 28.80 L of wine per capita annually, ranking 14th in the world for most litres consumed.

The top five most expensive countries to buy wine overall were the United Arab Emirates ($51.15/bottle), Singapore ($50.52), Maldives ($47.03), Israel ($39.61) and South Korea ($38.28).

The most affordable local wine can be found in Nepal ($6.80/bottle), while the most expensive was Venezuela ($34.00).

Luxembourg consumed the most wine per capital (61.30 L/year), followed closely by Portugal (55.40 L) and France (53.60 L).
