Mondi spices up high-barrier paper packaging for food maker
Mondi has collaborated with Prymat, a Polish dried seasoning manufacturer, to create a sustainable and functional packaging solution for its aromatic spices.
The producer of spices and food additives was searching for a sustainable alternative to its conventional non-recyclable multi-layer packaging. Given the high barrier requirements for the preservation of spice quality, aroma and freshness, it was a technical challenge to find an alternative so Prymat worked with Mondi to develop a solution.
Adrian Goralski, Managing Director Mondi Solec, said, “It is essential to understand the individual needs of each customer when creating packaging solutions. There are often several different routes to sustainability, and at Mondi, we work closely with brands to thoroughly learn about every step of their production, distribution and end use, so that we can create and test various options and be sure we are delivering the best possible and most sustainable outcome.”
After extensive trials and tests to prove the functionality of the sustainable alternatives, the spice maker has decided to transition to Mondi’s re/cycle FunctionalBarrier Paper Ultimate packaging for its dried spice range.
According to Mondi’s product impact assessment tool, FunctionalBarrier Paper Ultimate solution delivers a lower CO2 impact compared with conventional multi-layer plastic or aluminium-based solutions. Containing at least 80% paper and a functional barrier coating optimised for recycling, the solution is confirmed recyclable according to the latest CEPI recyclability laboratory test method. It provides protection against oxygen, water vapour and grease, with an oxygen transmission rate (OTR) below 0.5 cm3/m2d and water vapour transmission rate (WVTR) below 0.5 g/m2d, preserving the spices’ aroma and taste.
Designed to deliver high-quality printing results, the packaging has provided good shelf appeal for the spice range. The level of stiffness provides a good dead fold, allowing the end user to fold the pack after first use to close it. The solution is compatible with existing filling lines at Prymat, which eliminated the need for investment in machinery.
“Thanks to our collaboration with Mondi, we were able to develop a solution that aligns our sustainability ambitions with the highest standards of product quality,” said Marta Klęka-Nowa, PR Manager Prymat.
