The Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) Goatmeat global snapshot has been released.

The snapshot covers several key export markets including USA and Canada, Taiwan, Korea, Trinidad and Tobago, and Malaysia, as well as insights from the Australian domestic market.

Despite the decrease in supply and Australia accounting for only 1% of global production, Australia remains the largest exporter of goatmeat.

Australia exported approximately 90% of production in 2018, with exports totalling 21,026 tonnes shipped weight — a decrease of 26% from 2017 levels.

The United States received 68% of Australian goatmeat exports in 2018.

As a result of tough seasonal conditions in 2018, Australian goat production totalled 23,388 tonnes carcase weight — 26% lower than 2017 figures — while goat slaughter fell by 20% year-on-year to 1.65 million head.

Although the prospects for Australian goatmeat exports are positive, some challenges remain in key markets.
