Eggscellent: most Australians view egg industry favourably
According to research by Voconiq, a company spun out of CSIRO, Australians increasingly trust the egg industry. The large survey, conducted on behalf of Australian Eggs, shows that since 2018, Australians view the eggs industry more favourably. 90% of people support egg farming and 80% of people believe that technology has improved the welfare and environmental outcomes of egg farms.
Views about the industry have shifted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with a substantial majority of people expressing appreciation for the effort that farmers went to in producing their food and many saying that the pandemic made them appreciate the importance of safe, reliable eggs in their diet. Almost all people felt that egg production is an essential service. Many Australians also think that eggs are a more sustainable choice than in years past and that the egg industry maintains higher levels of hen welfare than it previously did.
“The Australian egg industry is proactive in working to discover ways to better operate from a sustainability and environmentally conscious point of view, continually investing in new technology to improve welfare and environmental outcomes. We intend to showcase again how responsive we are to taking the public’s feedback on board over the coming year,” said Rowan McMonnies, Managing Director of Australian Eggs.
