Aussie formula to counter US shortages
Aussie Bubs will be providing the US with 1.25 million cans of infant formula — enough to make millions of bottles of milk — to help the country as it struggles with a shortage of formula products. Some of the Australian stock is already on its way to American shores and more will be produced in the coming weeks and months.
Regulatory changes have been implemented that allow infant formula from outside the US to pick up the slack, with some products to be imported from the UK in addition to the formula from Australia. Aussie Bubs, produced by Bubs Australia, is already sold in the country but the specific products being sent internationally are made according to Australian regulations.
Aussie Bubs formula products such as stage 1 and 2 cans of Bubs Organic Grass Fed, Bubs Supreme A2 Beta-Casein Protein and Bubs Easy-digest Goat Milk will be making their way to US stores.
The US is currently dealing with a nationwide shortage of baby formula, partly due to a recall by Abbott Laboratories of its formulas after four infants fell sick after consuming products made in its Michigan plant. This plant is one of the largest formula-making factories in the country and is responsible for half of the company’s total production capacity.
Neither Abbott nor the country’s food safety agency, the Food and Drug Administration, has published a direct link between Abbott’s formulas and the illnesses but the recall has seen cans of formula removed from shelves, which has resulted in severe shortages. Other factors driving the shortage go back to 2020, when consumers began to stockpile the formula, as well as general supply chain issues brought about by the pandemic.
