Plastics course to be rerun

Wednesday, 11 May, 2011

The Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) is rerunning the half-day training course on the Introduction to Plastics on Thursday 4 August 2011. To be held at Oatlands Golf Course, NSW, the course presenter will be Pierre Pienaar FAIP.

The class introduces basic principles, techniques and equipment for the most commonly used physical and analytical tests on polymeric materials.

It will present a precise, non-mathematical introduction to plastics, their raw materials, syntheses, properties and applications, discussing the manufacture and properties of plastics as a function of the molecular properties of polymers used in the plastics industry.

Understanding what plastics are, and where and how best they can be used, could well ensure that you can make better informed decisions to your senior management as to applications in your area of work. Understanding the fundamentals of polymeric materials helps ensure cost-effective packaging and how to achieve it, and the session reviews the main drivers of using plastics instead of other packaging materials.

At the completion of this half-day training course, participants should be able to:

  • discuss the different mainstream plastic materials used in general packaging
  • understand some basic organic chemistry associated with plastics
  • understand plastics and their appropriate applications
  • have an understanding as to how the different plastic moulding systems work
  • be able to make informed decisions regarding plastic and their costs
  • be able to choose appropriate plastic material for specific uses
  • acquire an appreciation of future trends and developments with the polymer science confines of packaging

Who should attend?

This course is intended for people who have a direct involvement in packaging operations as well as design and development within all packaging associated industries. This would include the production, development, technology, purchasing, sales, QA/QC, marketing, regulatory and development functions. The course will conclude with applications in the industry, associated problems and choosing the correct plastics for the application.
