Inaugural AFS - SAI Global scholarship winner announced

Wednesday, 11 December, 2013

Advancing Food Safety (AFS) - SAI Global has announced the winner of its inaugural scholarship program: Emma McPherson, a laboratory technician at Lion Dairy and Drinks. McPherson competed against other industry professionals to secure the scholarship, which commences in January 2014.

The scholarship will see McPherson undertake a Diploma in Food Industry QA Management with AFS - SAI Global. McPherson’s application included an article on why potentially fatal Listeria is still present in manufacturing and finished goods nationally. The organisation was impressed with her drive and ambition within the industry.

Launched in line with the 20th anniversary of the Australian HACCP Conference, the scholarship program aims to foster innovative and pioneering talent in Australia’s food safety industry.

“It’s our aim to drive new - and develop existing - talent further in an aim to help increase the level of expertise within the industry,” said John Fallon, expert trainer with AFS - SAI Global.

“The launch of this initiative creates a pathway for passionate individuals who want to excel in their contribution to food safety. This is something we’re planning to continue as an annual event.

While the funded scholarship can only be achieved through a competitive selection process, the Diploma in Food Industry QA Management is open to individuals who require the skills and knowledge and hold the roles and responsibilities of quality-assurance management.

“Many food industry businesses place existing staff into quality-assurance roles without the individual having any prior experience. This training provides these employees with the knowledge required to operate efficiently in an easy-to-understand format. I expect it will be one of our most popular courses moving into 2014,” said Fallon.

The Food Industry QA Management diploma encompasses HACCP training, Internal Food Safety Auditing, Lead Food Safety Auditing, Food Safety QA Management and Advanced Food Safety QA Management. For more information visit www.haccptown.com.au/Australia/html/TrainingQAManagement.htm.
