Passionate about raw milk products? Have your say!

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has issued a call for submissions on a proposal that will permit the production and sale of an increased range of raw milk products in Australia.

If approved the proposal would see requirements for raw milk products introduced into the Food Standards Code.

“Under the current Food Standards Code, only certain types of raw milk products (hard to very hard cooked curd cheeses) are permitted and permissions for other types of products can be granted by application,” FSANZ CEO Steve McCutcheon said.

“FSANZ is now assessing requirements that would permit additional raw milk products, as long as certain through-chain measures are in place to ensure safety. Businesses would have to demonstrate to enforcement agencies that these measures are effectively implemented.”

FSANZ is also inviting submissions on a proposal to review limits for Listeria monocytogenes in the Food Standards Code. Proposal P1017 seeks to establish criteria that are based on whether growth of Listeria can occur in ready-to-eat (RTE) foods.

“This approach is consistent with L. monocytogenes management internationally. It recognises that L. monocytogenes is able to grow to high numbers in some foods and should not be present at detectable levels if the food is to be kept safe. In other foods, where we know the pathogen cannot grow, there is a possibility for occasional low-level detections that will not affect the safety of the food,” McCutcheon said.

“The review of the limits for L. monocytogenes is the first stage of a broader review of microbiological limits in the code.”

The closing date for both submissions is 10 January 2014.
