IFT releases Traceability supplement to Journal of Food Science

Wednesday, 26 February, 2014

The Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) has announced a new Traceability supplement as part of its Journal of Food Science.

Available online, the supplement aims to “catalyse and jump-start the process of achieving a multidisciplinary, cross-functional, whole-community approach to food traceability”, the IFT says.

The supplement will contain peer-reviewed articles on the IFT’s three Traceability Research Summits, where 50 subject matter experts from the food and technology sectors convened to discuss the definition of traceability, how to achieve it and its importance. The IFT says this set the stage for pre-competitive multi-stakeholder cross-sector collaboration in moving the food industry towards improved traceability.

Also included is an executive summary of the food product tracing pilots conducted by IFT for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to evaluate the need for additional record-keeping requirements to improve traceability practices.

In addition, the supplement contains the summary of a study funded by the National Center for Food Protection and Defense that examines the interoperability of traceability technologies. A white paper on how all this fits together is also included.
