Comment invited on application for GM cotton-derived food

Tuesday, 18 March, 2014

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) is calling for comments regarding a Dow AgroSciences application to permit food derived from a genetically modified herbicide-tolerant cotton line.

“The cotton has been genetically modified to tolerate the herbicides 2, 4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and glufosinate ammonium,” said FSANZ CEO Steve McCutcheon.

“Our safety assessment found no public health or safety concerns, and concluded that food derived from this cotton line is as safe for human consumption as food derived from conventional cotton cultivars.”

Government agencies, public health professionals, industry and the community are welcome to submit comments on the application. The closing date for submissions is 29 April 2014. For more information on the application, click here. To make a submission, click here.
