Aussie startup wins big in FoodBytes! Pitch competition

The winners of the FoodBytes! Pitch competition have been announced and Great Wrap, an Australian startup company that makes sustainable food wrap, was crowned the winner in the Consumer Packaged Goods category.

The award was given as part of RaboBank’s competition for food startups. It sees companies from around the world receive mentorship and advice, while they are judged on how they address global food challenges. They also receive exposure to investors and business leaders, along with pitch refinement advice and media visibility.

Three winners were selected from a pool of 15 finalists and Great Wrap was the only Australian company recognised with an award (though there was stiff competition). The Victorian-based startup produces compostable food wrap that is quickly and easily broken down, leaving behind only carbon and water. It uses no microplastics and can be composted in a regular household bin, as it doesn’t require high temperatures to degrade nor does it leave any toxic residues.

“It’s been a steep learning curve and we’ve benefited from FoodBytes! mentorship and leadership,” Great Wrap co-founder Jordy Kay said of the competition.

“This experience helped introduce us to great potential partners who we are looking forward to working with us in the future, and it’s also been helpful to meet other founders — some of the industry’s smartest — working in a similar space globally.”

The other two winners were 3Bar Biologics Inc. and Paragon Pure in the AgTech and Food Tech categories respectively.

The Foodbytes! Pitch program is already taking applications for 2022. For more information about the program, click here.
