Multivac FreshSafe microperforation system

FreshSafe is a packaging concept in which microperforations are produced inline by laser technology on normal plastic films in packaging machines. Multivac offers its users the choice of creating the small perforations using needle rollers or by laser technology.

The latter method produces microperforations with precision at any point of the utilised upper web, in the desired number, and with a precisely defined diameter. The concentrated light beams of the lasers melt the material so that smooth, clean edges are produced.

Accuracy is vital - with perforation diameters of less than 0.1 mm, the perforation accuracy is high - one microperforation is identical to another. The use of laser technology permits labels to be placed anywhere on the packaging as desired by the customer - microperforations are then simply omitted from the areas where the labels are to be placed.

One advantage of microperforated film is an extended shelf life achieved for fruit, vegetables and mushrooms with high levels of respiration. Baked goods retain their crispness, and the desired formation of white mould is possible on the surfaces of soft cheeses and Harzer cheeses.

An advantage of the laser system is in part its flexibility and in the other that it is virtually maintenance free and durable. After the adjustment, the laser perforation requires no further maintenance, even after 30,000 h.

The machine control of the laser system is operated directly from the user interface on the packaging machine. All current upper webs can be adjusted by means of the laser perforation to the specific permeability that is required in each instance. This results in a noticeable extension of shelf life and in less waste.

Multivac also provides a choice between two microperforation systems. The laser perforation is specifically recommended for automation solutions in which a rapid adjustment of the permeability of the products to be packaged is required.
