Label Power expands production capacity for food labels, carcass tags and packaging solutions
Label Power has improved its production capabilities by installing the Bobst Master M5X UV 430 flexo label and coupon press, allowing it to meet the growing demands of the food industry for food labels, carcass tags and food packaging materials.
James Malone, founder and CEO of Label Power, said the press was purchased for its ability to produce multi-layer coupon labels and to perforate and sheet using three die stations — these features are essential for food industry applications, where labels often require intricate designs such as peel-and-reveal formats or multi-layer constructions to effectively communicate product information.
With a web width of 440 mm, this new press allows for the production of larger, more detailed labels compared to the previous 340 mm presses. There is a growing demand for larger labels in the food industry, as they often need to display a wide range of regulatory information, including nutritional facts, ingredient lists, allergen warnings, and barcodes. The press also has the ability to print up to 10 colours in a single pass, which can provide vibrant and clear labels to enhance product visibility while ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
In addition to its size and colour capabilities, the press has the ability to print on a variety of materials. In the food industry, this versatility is important as packaging materials can vary widely, from flexible plastic films for perishable products to more rigid paperboard for tags and boxes. With the press having the ability to print on diverse materials, Label Power can provide high-quality solutions for various food-related applications, from fresh food labels to multi-layer promotional coupons.
One of the key features of the press is the Print Tutor system, which automates the setup and registration process. By using a mark-to-mark detection camera on each printing unit, the system continuously monitors the quality of the printed job to ensure accuracy and minimal waste. “The Print Tutor system is amazing and allows for quick setup with very little waste,” said Malone. The short web path on the press further reduces material waste during setup and enhances overall operational efficiency.
For fresh food products like meat and poultry, the ability to produce labels and carcass tags that are legible and durable is crucial. The Bobst Master M5X allows Label Power to produce food labels that are clear, vibrant and also able to withstand the rigours of storage, handling and transport. Carcass tags, for example, must be resistant to cold temperatures and moisture, ensuring that the food remains traceable throughout the supply chain.
Alongside the installation of the Bobst Master M5X, Label Power has also added a 530 mm wide, eight-colour Omet Kflex press with water-cooled GEW LEO LED UV curing technology, which is believed to be the first of its kind in Australia. The company has also earned HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) food certification, which ensures food labels, carcass tags, etc., produced by Label Power are manufactured in a controlled environment with an emphasis on food safety at every step of the process.
With an expanded product offering thanks to the rebranding of Action Labels & Nameplates, which was acquired in 2020, Label Power has operations in Melbourne and Brisbane.
“We are continually investing in extra capacity to serve the market,” Malone said. “We plan to keep growing the business and enhancing our technological capabilities to better serve the food industry. The future looks exciting, and we’re eager to continue delivering quality solutions to our clients.”
