Wiliot's supply chain carbon tracker on best inventions list

Wiliot’s stamp-sized ambient IoT Pixels are small, low-cost tags that link any physical object to the digital world. The self-powered devices can be attached to any object, providing real-time data on its location, temperature, humidity and carbon footprint.

For the food and beverage industry, the data can be used to help reduce waste and enable increased visibility into a product’s location, temperature, carbon emissions and humidity — from harvest to storefront.

The Wiliot ambient IoT Visibility Platform has been named on TIME’s list of the Best Inventions of 2023.

To compile the list of 2023 best inventions, TIME solicited nominations from editors and correspondents around the world, and through an online application process, paying special attention to growing fields — such as AI, green energy, and sustainability. It then evaluated each contender on several key factors, including originality, efficacy, ambition and impact.

The Wiliot platform connects the digital and physical worlds using its IoT Pixels which can attach to any ‘thing’ — not just expensive things like cars, appliances and shipping containers, but the things inside them: fruits, veggies, vaccine vials, clothes, crates, etc.

Once connected, products transmit real-time, item-level information about their location, temperature, humidity and even carbon footprint. This information can then be used to help businesses enhance their supply chain sustainability.

For food producers and retailers, the platform can help them comply with new FDA traceability rules. As part of the Food Safety and Modernization Act’s Rule 204 (FSMA 204), companies must track the safety of food products and share traceability data with the FDA and consumers.

“Inefficiencies and waste across supply chains have a significant impact on the planet,” said Antony Yousefian, Wiliot’s VP of Climate & Circularity. “Wiliot addresses these inefficiencies by creating an ambient IoT that brings intelligence and internet connectivity to every single ‘thing’ in the global supply chain, enabling products to transmit item-level information about their location, temperature, and carbon footprint. We are honored to have Wiliot and our breakthrough ambient IoT Pixels recognised by the editors of TIME.”
