Native milk protein certified by Non-GMO Project
Arla Foods Ingredients MicelPure, a native milk protein, has become the first product by the company to be certified by North America’s Non-GMO Project.
Certified products are permitted to carry the Butterfly label, providing consumers with assurance of third-party assessment for compliance with the Non-GMO Project Standard, which incorporates stringent provisions for testing, traceability and segregation.
MicelPure is a micellar casein isolate that contains 86% native protein and is naturally high in calcium. It is suitable for use in sports nutrition and other healthy food applications. Already certified EU Organic and China Organic, it is produced from Danish milk by gentle membrane filtration technology to ensure protein remains in its natural form with minimal denaturation.
Troels Nørgaard Laursen, Director for Health & Performance at Arla Foods Ingredients, said this is an important certification at a time where GMO-free foods are in demand.
A study found that 83% of US consumers are aware of GMOs, with 44% citing “GMO free” as an important statement on food and beverage labels. After USDA Organic, the Non-GMO Project Verified seal is one of the most widely recognised food certification schemes, representing around $40 billion in annual sales and over 66,000 products. Research has found that brands bearing the Butterfly logo experience a 20% sales uplift.
