Call for comment on GM enzyme processing aid
Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) is calling for comment on an application to permit the use of an enzyme processing aid: phosphoinositide phospholipase C (EC 3.1.4.11).
This enzyme is produced using Bacillus licheniformis that has been genetically modified to carry a gene from another type of bacteria, Pseudomonas species 62186.
The application seeks approval to use phosphoinositide phospholipase C in degumming vegetable fats and oils — an important step in the refining process.
FSANZ’s safety assessment has found no public health or safety concerns with the proposed use of the enzyme.
Those wishing to provide feedback can visit the FSANZ Consultation Hub. Submissions close at 11:59 pm (AEST) on Tuesday, 30 September 2025.
