NZ to generate extra value from beef carcases

Thursday, 06 December, 2012

New Zealand has developed an innovation program to investigate how to generate more value from beef carcases. The Foodplus program has been approved for co-funding from the Primary Growth Partnership (PGP).

The PGP Fund will commit $43.5 million over seven years for the program, which is being run by ANZCO Foods.

Foodplus will identify opportunities to create new products from parts of the beef carcase that currently generate less value. ANZCO has identified three markets for new products: food, ingredients and healthcare.

“Adding further value to the carcase is essential for the future success of the meat industry,” said Wayne McNee, Ministry for Primary Industries Director General. “ANZCO’s vision for Foodplus is relevant and bold, and now backed by a significant investment.”

“It is a large-scale project that wouldn’t be achievable without collaboration,” said Rennie Davidson, CEO of ANZCO’s Food & Solutions division. “We’re excited about the potential that this will bring the sector.”
