MonoSol develops edible, water-soluble food packaging
Water-soluble film manufacturer MonoSol has developed an edible, water-soluble pouch. Engineered from Vivos films, Vivos Edible Delivery Systems break down and release their contents when exposed to hot or cold liquids. The dissolved food can be consumed along with the food.
MonoSol says the edible pouches are convenient and offer sustainability benefits, with no primary packaging to dispose of. For foodservice kitchens and food manufacturers, the pre-measured quantities may improve accuracy and save production time and processing costs.

The patent-pending film is made from a blend of food-grade ingredients and is transparent, with no taste or smell when consumed. It has good oxygen barrier properties and robust mechanical properties, MonoSol says, which will make it suitable for use with a range of foods and existing converting technologies.
MonSol anticipates the technology will be used in applications like instant coffees and teas, drink sticks, proteins and other workout supplements and warm breakfast meals.
The company has made a series of YouTube videos showing how the Vivos pouches work to make soup, instant coffee, oatmeal and whey protein drinks.
