FSANZ asks for feedback about review of infant formula
Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has called for submissions regarding its review of the regulations for infant formula, including follow-on formulas and infant formulas for special dietary use.
The agency will be assessing whether or not the current regulations are providing adequate measures to ensure the safety of the products and that they do not cause health issues in the consumers of infant formula. Any new scientific advice will be integrated into the review in order to keep the regulations up-to-date, as the currently used standard was developed at the turn of the century.
“Our review aims to ensure regulation of infant formula is clear, reflects the latest scientific evidence and aligns with international standards,” said Dr Sandra Cuthbert, CEO of FSANZ.
“Although breastfeeding is the recommended way to feed a baby, a safe and nutritious substitute for breast milk is needed for babies who are not breastfed.
“Infant formula must be safe for formula-fed infants to consume, and caregivers need to know how to prepare, use and store the product safely.”
Submissions are being accepted until 10 June, although FSANZ will also initiate further calls for submission later in the year.
The submission process and documents supporting the proposed review by FSANZ are outlined on the page below.
