Marking milestones in Aussie seafood on World Fisheries Day
Seafood Industry Australia (SIA) is encouraging all Australians to celebrate World Fisheries Day today (21 November). The leading representative for Australia’s commercial fishing industry is also celebrating the launch of ‘Our Pledge’, a commitment to the community to do the right thing to ensure a vibrant future for the seafood industry.
“We really are the lucky country when it comes to seafood, and we have a lot to be proud of. To celebrate, why not tuck into some great Aussie seafood brought to you by the 41,000 people in this country who work hard to supply the best quality seafood all year round?” said Jack Lovell, SIA CEO.
The Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES) has given Commonwealth-managed fisheries a positive report card for the sixth consecutive year. This highlights the quality of Australia’s Commonwealth fisheries management and commitment to providing Australians with sustainable seafood. The Australian seafood industry has also instigated a prawn traceability program which verifies provenance to a forensic standard, protecting the integrity and origin of Australian prawns.
“Australians love their premium quality seafood, and the Australian seafood industry is committed to putting great local seafood on tables locally and across the world for generations to come,” Lovell said.
This World Fisheries Day, SIA will be celebrating these milestones, while highlighting the importance of healthy oceans and environments, both of which are key concerns for Our Pledge.
