Suspended abattoir re-opens under strict conditions

Monday, 12 March, 2012

The NSW Food Authority has lifted the suspension on Hawkesbury Valley Meat Processors’ licence. Operations at the Wilberforce facility are permitted to recommence on 12 March, subject to strict conditions set by the Food Authority.

The abattoir was shut down by the Food Authority on 10 February after video footage showing acts of animal mistreatment were shown. A criminal investigation into the allegations of mistreatment is currently being undertaken by the NSW Food Authority and the RSPCA; the Food Authority said the abattoir was cooperating fully with the investigation.

In order to recommence operations, the company has had to demonstrate that it will meet strict requirements set by the NSW Food Authority.

To meet these requirements, the abattoir has employed two specialist consultants to oversee processing, one of whom is a former senior AQIS veterinarian. The cattle race has also been modified, as have procedures to move animals up the race in order to facilitate animal movement and reduce baulking.

CCTV cameras have been installed to monitor animal treatment, with the company regularly monitoring the footage and providing access to authorities during audits.

The abattoir’s food safety program has been amended and stringent requirements for stunning and slaughtering procedures and processes have been put in place. Staff have completed nationally-approved animal welfare training and slaughtermen who have not completed the training will not be able to work in the abattoir.

The facility will be subject to increased audits and inspections by the NSW Food Authority to ensure it is complying with legislation and its amended food safety program. Further inspections will also be carried out by the RSPCA.

Since 10 February, the NSW Food Authority has inspected all domestic abattoirs operating in NSW and, with an increased inspection program, will continue to monitor compliance.
