Proposed changes to the Food Standards Code

Monday, 24 April, 2006

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) wants the public to voice their opinions on the issues that could affect their health and the food they eat.

The latest changes being proposed to the Food Standards Code include regulations that cover the content, labelling and handling of food throughout the supply chain.

Changes under consideration include the development of a food safety standard for the dairy industry, new requirements for infant foods, approval of foods derived from genetically modified corn and lucerne, and a review of processing aids.

FSANZ has to ensure that the changes will not negatively affect the health of consumers, especially in the case of GM foods and food additives. This is done by carrying out pre-market safety assessments.

Individuals and organisations with an interest in food regulation are given an opportunity to comment on the proposed changes. FSANZ responds to these comments publicly in documents posted on its website.
