Pepe’s Ducks in trouble over ‘open range’ claims

Thursday, 12 July, 2012

Australian duck meat producer Pepe’s Ducks is facing prosecution by the ACCC over claims that it has misrepresented the way it raises its ducks.

The ACCC said Pepe’s Ducks “made false or misleading claims on its packaging, website, delivery trucks, signage, stationery and merchandise”. While Pepe’s claims that its ducks are “open range” and “grown nature’s way”, the ACCC claims the ducks are “raised solely in indoor sheds without access to the outdoors or other conditions in which ducks naturally live”.

The ACCC is seeking orders that Pepe’s Ducks publish corrective notices on its website and a corrective letter to its customers, as well as fines and orders that Pepe’s Ducks implement a trade practices compliance program.
