Indonesia, spying allegations and the live beef trade in context

Friday, 29 November, 2013

In The Conversation there is an interesting article about the threats to Australian trade with Indonesia as a result of the current spying allegations.

The article does outline how Australia provides 20-30% of Indonesia’s beef consumption and this is around 40-65% of Australia’s live cattle export. While these figures are very significant figures for the cattle industry, the article goes on to mention that live cattle exports amount to only 0.2% of total Australian exports of goods and services.

Trade between Indonesia and Australia accounts for less than 3% of either country’s imports - in context, this makes the trade war threat rather small bikkies.
