FSANZ welcoming comments on genetically modified soybean report

Monday, 11 April, 2011

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has called for comment on an assessment report for food derived from a genetically modified soybean.

FSANZ Chief Executive Steve McCutcheon said a second assessment report had been released on an application for a genetically modified soybean that is a plant source of omega-3 fatty acids.

“The report relates to an application to use a new variety of soybean, genetically modified to produce stearidonic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid, in the seeds of the plant,” McCutcheon said.

“FSANZ welcomes comments from government agencies, public health professionals, industry and the community on issues raised in the report.”
