DAFF reassures consumers following E. coli outbreak in US

Wednesday, 30 May, 2012

The Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry - Biosecurity (DAFF Biosecurity) has released a media statement on the alleged implication of Australian beef in US ground beef products that recently tested positive to E. coli 0157:H7.

The DAFF statement said, “Following tracing of the export consignment it was confirmed that the implicated Australian product was found negative through the Australian E. coli 0157:H7 testing program prior to export and complied with the relevant US testing program.” DAFF also stated that the consignment had met US import requirements and was cleared by US border authorities.

According to DAFF, the source of the contamination is still to be confirmed, but “discussions are ongoing with all parties concerned.”

DAFF assured consumers that all meat produced in Australia, both for export and domestic consumption, is safe to consume.
