Recycling is really taking off on the Sunshine Coast. Staff and visitors at the Sunshine Coast Airport will now be able to recycle away from home, following the installation of 23 new waste and recycling bins.

Funded by the Packaging Stewardship Forum (PSF) of the Australian Food and Grocery Council and Sunshine Coast Regional Council, the bins carry the PSF’s national recycling call to action: Do the Right Thing, Use the Right Bin.

More than 850,000 travellers and visitors pass through the airport each year, and the new system is expected to divert more than 10 tonnes of PET, glass and aluminium cans from the airport each year - the equivalent of 830,000 small plastic bottles.

“Sunshine Coast Airport was eager to encourage recycling in its terminal and we came on board with some expertise on how to do it,” said Jenny Pickles, General Manager of the PSF. “Through well-placed bin infrastructure and promotion of the Do the Right Thing, Use the Right Bin message, the new systems will make it just as easy to recycle away from home as it is at home.”

Installations have already been completed at a number of airports: Melbourne’s Virgin and Qantas terminals, food courts and car parks; Sydney Terminals 1 and 2; Brisbane’s Virgin, Qantas and International terminals; Perth’s Qantas and Westralia terminals; Launceston airport; Broome airport; and regional airports in Cairns, Rockhampton, the Gold Coast, Mackay, Townsville, Albury and Newcastle.
