Thermo Fisher method for determining anions in dried distillers grains with solubles
Thermo Fisher Scientific has developed a simple and accurate new method that determines inorganic anions, such as chloride, sulfate and phosphate, that contribute to the nutritional composition of dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) in less than 10 min.
Application Note 1044: Determination of Anions in Dried Distillers Grains with Solubles claims to demonstrate reliable, accurate and precise separation of these anions using a hydroxide-selective anion-exchange column. The simple sample preparation and electrolytic eluent generator also enhance the ease of use, reproducibility and automation level of this method.
Distillers grains are used as livestock feed because they are an excellent source of energy, protein and essential minerals that provide three times the amount of nutrients available from grain alone. Because the nutritional composition of DDGS can vary from batch to batch, the distillery industry is interested in determining DDGS composition to properly formulate a nutritionally balanced diet for the animal feed industry.
Sulfur and phosphorus are two minerals that contribute to the variability of DDGS. Therefore, monitoring the amount of these minerals in DDGS provides a good measure of the nutritional composition of DDGS.
