Food allergies and intolerances affect a significant proportion of the population. As a result, food manufacturers are required to declare the presence of the major food allergens in their product such as peanuts, gluten and soy. Also, manufacturers are increasingly creating new products that specifically do not contain certain ingredients; for example, there has been an explosion of gluten-free products coming onto the market in recent years. The presence of undeclared allergens in food products is not only a potential danger to the consumer but also a leading cause of food recalls, which are costly in terms of both dollars and brand image.
Sources of allergens in finished product can be from raw materials, cross-contamination from other products made on the same equipment or transferred from elsewhere in the manufacturing plant. The ability to test at all levels, both raw and finished goods, as well as the plant environment is an important tool in prevention of contaminated product.
Previously, testing for allergens has been either too complicated or too expensive to do in house. However, with the latest range of allergen testing kits from Romer Labs, it is now possible for all manufacturers to perform their own testing on site. The tests are rapid, cost effective, easy to use and require very little equipment or set-up. The kits are suitable for both very low and very large volume testing.
The range currently includes tests for the detection of peanut, gluten, milk, tree nuts, egg and soy.
