Apple variety that's red on the inside being released by Montague
Australian fresh produce business Montague is harvesting a small quantity of KISSABEL apples. The newer variety is set to hit the Australian market in the coming week.
This variety of apple is over 20 years in the making and only available in small amounts. The produce business and its network of growers manage over 5850 trees growing, across 1.6 hectares of land currently. Characterised by pink blossoms in the spring, these apples transform into medium- and large-sized, red-blushed fruits in the autumn.
This year, the harvest is anticipated to reach close to 36,000 kilograms, with all apples being packed by Montague. The crop is expected to be available at a commercial level in later years; in the meantime it is available through selected restaurants, specialty bakeries and outlets. A limited number of retail stores will be selling to test the market, including The Orchard at Montague in Narre Warren North, Victoria.
