Introduction to corrugated boxes half-day training course

This half-day training course will present the humble corrugated box as probably the most diverse single-form packaging medium in use throughout the world, today and in the future. The course will cover the basics of papermaking for the box industry, will then progress through the conversion of paper and other materials into the finished package that is so necessary for the marketing, safe storage and transportation of virtually every type of product that we buy on a daily basis.

Modified atmosphere packaging and barrier materials half-day training course

This half-day course will cover MAP and its application to fruit, vegetables, meat and fish, followed by the functional attributes of MAP films. The important role of active packaging (antimicrobials, antioxidants etc) including recent developments and future projections will be examined. The important area of nanotechnology and its applications covering film inclusions eg, nanofibres and nanoclays and their use in MAP will be covered. Advances in polymeric films including sustainability together with the technical assessment and monitoring of modified atmosphere packs will be outlined. The recent scientific opinion from EFSA on the risk assessment of the application of nanoscience and nanotechnologies in the food and feed chain will be addressed in respect to packaging materials.

The half-day training course is designed for anyone who has an interest or involvement in the use of MAP and barrier materials. The aim is to provide a comprehensive overview of techniques and materials and recent developments. It will include a recent project dealing with whole meals for the catering sector.

Approved persons course for thermal processing of low-acid foods

This course, approved by AQIS, will provide participants with necessary skills to design a safe and commercially viable thermal schedule for the processing of low-acid food products in hermetically sealed packaging.

It involves four days of lectures in thermal processing, practical heat penetration work, process calculations, tutorials and preparation for exams. Two examinations will be given on the fifth day, which will cover theory and practical thermal calculations.

Participants who successfully pass the examination will be authorised to submit new thermal process schedules for approval by AQIS.

Anuga FoodTec 2012

Anuga FoodTec, the international trade fair for food and drink technology, will open its doors for the sixth time from 27 to 30 March 2012. More than 100 suppliers have already registered to participate in Cologne.

ARBS 2012

The 2012 Air Conditioning, Refrigeration and Building Services (ARBS 2012) exhibition and seminar program will be held from 7-9 May 2012 at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre.

2012 AIP National Conference

The Australian Institute of Packaging will be taking its 2012 National Conference to Surfers Paradise.

The 45th Annual AIFST Convention

International Nonthermal Food Processing Workshop - FIESTA 2012

CSIRO is once again hosting the international IFT/EFFoST nonthermal food processing workshop. The theme of the 2012 workshop is ‘Innovative Processes for Sustainable, Safe and Healthy Foods’.

The workshop will highlight opportunities for nonthermal and other innovative technologies in adding value to foods and enabling the sustainable manufacture of healthier food products (such as reduced salt, fat and sugar) that benefit Australian and international markets.

Session themes will address innovative technologies for:

  • a sustainable future
  • a safe supply chain
  • sensory aspects, human health and nutrition
  • processing and commercial development challenges

There will also be a poster session, in which several posters will be selected for short oral presentations and considered for the Most Outstanding Posters Awards. The deadline for submitting poster abstracts is 15 July 2012.
