The Japanese packaging industry grew to just shy of US$60 billion in the 2013 financial year. Paper packaging and pouch forming/filling machinery comprised the majority of the packaging materials and equipment sector respectively.

In FY2013, the Japanese packaging industry grew by more than 2% from FY12 to reach ¥6.049 trillion, representing 1.27% of the national GDP.

Of this amount, packaging materials and containers represented ¥5.608 trillion, while packaging machinery contributed ¥441 billion. 18.75 million tons of packaging materials were produced in FY2013, while 356,000 units of packaging machinery were manufactured.

Interestingly, wood performed better than glass with 2.5% value of the market, compared to 2% for glass. This is due to wood frequently being used in the packaging of more traditional products.

Paper packaging products made up the majority of packaging materials and containers produced by both shipment value and volume at 41.8% and 62.5% of the market respectively. Plastic packaging products constituted 29.7% of shipment value and 18.7% of volume.

Metal packaging products hold a 17% market share, while other packaging materials such as seals, labels, tapes, textile products and cellophanes made up 7% of total packaging value in 2013 - or ¥3.8 billion.

Packaging machinery sales have reportedly picked up over the last two years, increasing by 3% since the 2011 tsunami to reach ¥441.4 billion in 2013. Pouch forming and filling machines saw the highest demand with a total of 5686 units delivered - worth ¥60.5 billion in total. 3887 bottling machinery units were delivered, worth ¥57.9 billion. 3075 filling equipment units - valued at ¥37.8 billion - were installed.

However, canmaking equipment sales remained flat at ¥1.7 billion, with just 130 units installed across the country.
