Amcor Flexibles has won two categories in the Alufoil Trophy 2014, organised by the European Aluminium Foil Association (EAFA).

Amcor was awarded an Alufoil Trophy for its Belmoca coffee capsules in the Marketing & Design category. Beverage producer Belmoca selected Amcor Flexibles to create packaging for its five coffee flavours and milk portions. The portions are packaged in shiny, diamond-faceted aluminium capsules in different colours, fitting in with the company’s promotional slogan: ‘Belmoca - a diamond in your cup’.

Aside from the marketing impact, the diamond faceting brings additional strength to the capsules. The aluminium’s high barrier offers good aroma protection and allows for optimal storage, maximising the product’s freshness.

Amcor’s EMEND Tri-pack Formpack with peelable lidding won an Alufoil Trophy in the Consumer Convenience category for its improved ‘openability’ and product protection. The product comprises a peelable lid blister pack, combining a lidding foil and a Formpack coldformed bottom web, provided by Amcor Flexibles for Merck Sharp & Dohme Australia.

It is designed to contain medication that prevents nausea and vomiting caused by some anticancer medicines. It is easy for the patient to handle and improves on the previous pack format - a larger walleted tripack that required the patient to push the tablet through the blister pack lidding for access.

“This particular drug needs to be available when the patient is probably in some distress, so making it easier to access is a major benefit. Also, with an ageing population any format which helps people with less dexterity is very positive,” said Dr Mark Caul, technical manager for packaging at Tesco, who headed the judging panel.

“We are honoured to be distinguished as an Alufoil Trophy winner for both our food and pharmaceutical product ranges. The Alufoil Trophy in the category Marketing & Design for our Belmoca capsules and lidding material rewards our continuous focus on innovation and our commitment to finding better and smarter ways to improve the end user’s experience,” said Andrea Della Torre, R&D director pharma, pet food, retort and technical foils at Amcor Flexibles Europe & Americas
