World Class Advanced Wastewater and Sludge Dewatering Systems Demonstrated @ FoodPro 2017

Hydroflux presented World Class Wastewater and Sludge Dewatering Technology at this year’s FoodPro, which was held at the International Convention Centre this week. The company was showcasing a modern, high efficiency full-sized HyDAF-HD Dissolved Air Flotation system and the HUBER QPRESS® sludge dewatering technology that has proven to be the most popular dewatering option in 2017. Hydroflux also found that there was keen interest in Hydroflux’s solutions for solving high BOD in wastewater discharge.

“The Hydroflux HyDAF HD and the HUBER Q-Press are modern wastewater treatment and sludge management options, especially when packaged together in a turnkey treatment plant that has been tailored to suit our clients’ needs” said Mathew Pugh, a Director of Hydroflux Industrial. “We had many visitors to the stand who were interested in knowing more about the cost savings and improved performance that current technology can provide over traditional wastewater and sludge machines.

“However, we were surprised at the number of clients who also came to discuss their options for reducing the BOD in their discharge.”

BOD is a costly headache for many in the Food and Beverage industry and, unlike other wastewater contaminants, it often cannot be treated by a traditional physiochemical process.

As an example, Sydney Water’s charges show how significant these costs can be. Sydney Water’s charging models are often used as the benchmark for other water authorities and councils throughout Australia. A typical food and beverage manufacturer could be paying as much as $2.35/kg — to put this in perspective, if they were discharging a couple of hundred thousand litres per day this would cost them over $300,000 per year.

Given that many factories discharge five to ten times this quantity, reducing the BOD is critical to their ongoing operational costs.

“People were very interested the Hydroflux HySmart® Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) and Flootech’s FlooBed® Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) technology,” continued Mathew. “Both have proven their place in Industrial Wastewater Treatment — the MBBR is compact and very robust, and the HySmart® SBR is sustainably energy efficient.

“Another key benefit of FlooBed® MBBR technology that people found intriguing is that it can be designed for partial or full removal of organics that are causing the high BOD results. This is particularly favourable in trade waste applications where discharge limits for BOD are lower than can be achieved by a physiochemical process but higher than an environmental discharge.

“In Sydney, for example, we would tailor the plant to achieve 230 mg/L of BOD, which is the domestic limit, which can result in a significant reduction in the size and cost of the plant than if we were targeting 20 mg/L, for example”.

Hydroflux are currently installing a FlooBed® MBBR to treat 150 kL/day for a Food Processor in Brisbane, and a Hydroflux HySmart® SBR to treat 1.5 ML/day for an Abattoir in the Pacific Islands. Both sites are also including the modern Hydroflux HyDAF HD and the HUBER Q-Press equipment.
